What it's about
Biscayne National Park, located in southern Florida, is a marine paradise that encompasses coral reefs, mangrove forests, and the clear, turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. Spanning over 172,000 acres, the park is renowned for its vibrant underwater ecosystems and rich marine biodiversity. The park protects a unique combination of aquamarine waters, emerald islands, and fish-bejeweled coral reefs, offering a stunning natural setting for visitors.
The park’s history is rich with cultural and ecological significance. Established in 1980, Biscayne National Park preserves the northernmost part of the Florida Keys and a portion of the world’s third-largest coral reef. An interesting fact is that the park is home to the historic Stiltsville, a group of wooden houses built on stilts above the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay, dating back to the 1930s.
Must-see attractions include the vibrant coral reefs, which are perfect for snorkeling and diving, offering close encounters with colorful marine life and stunning coral formations. The Boca Chita Key Lighthouse provides panoramic views of the bay and surrounding islands. For a more immersive experience, visitors can take guided boat tours to explore the park’s islands and underwater treasures.
The best time to visit Biscayne National Park is during the winter months from December to April, when the weather is cooler and drier, making it ideal for outdoor activities and water sports. Summer can bring high temperatures and humidity, as well as the risk of hurricanes, making winter the preferred season for most visitors.
