What it's about
Cuyahoga Valley National Park, nestled between Cleveland and Akron in Ohio, is a verdant oasis of rolling hills, dense forests, and winding rivers. Spanning over 33,000 acres, the park preserves a picturesque stretch of the Cuyahoga River and offers a serene escape into nature. The park’s diverse landscapes include wetlands, waterfalls, and meadows, providing a rich habitat for a variety of wildlife.
The park holds significant historical and cultural importance. Established as a national park in 2000, Cuyahoga Valley preserves the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region, including remnants of the Ohio and Erie Canal. An interesting fact is that the park features more than 125 miles of hiking trails, including the iconic Towpath Trail, which follows the historic route of the canal.
Must-see attractions include Brandywine Falls, a 65-foot waterfall that cascades into a gorge, and the scenic Ledges Trail, which offers stunning views from sandstone cliffs. The historic Everett Covered Bridge, the last remaining covered bridge in Summit County, provides a glimpse into the area’s past. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad offers a unique way to experience the park’s beauty, with train rides that run through the heart of the valley.
The best time to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park is during the spring and fall, particularly between April and October, when the weather is mild and ideal for hiking, biking, and exploring the park’s trails. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant greenery, while fall offers a spectacular display of autumn colors. Summer is also popular for outdoor activities, while winter provides opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
