Fern Grotto

The Fern Grotto only navigable by boat or kayak. It is situated about two miles up the Wailua River on Kauai. Because of moisture leaking from the irrigation of sugarcane growing on the cliff plateau, beautiful ferns have been able to flourish on the cave walls of the grotto. The ferns started to disappear when the sugar industry went out of business until restoration efforts brought moisture back to the area.

Nestled in the lush, tropical foliage of Kauai's Wailua River State Park, Fern Grotto is a natural lava cave that's shrouded in greenery. The grotto gets its name from the large ferns that grows on its walls and ceiling, and it's accessible only by boat. Visitors can take a scenic cruise up the river to reach the grotto, or they can paddle their own kayaks or canoe. Once inside, the cave is dimly lit by sunlight filtering through the ferns, creating a tranquil and magical atmosphere. With its natural beauty and serene setting, Fern Grotto is one of Kauai's most popular tourist destinations.
