Description
Located just a short drive from Flagstaff in the Painted Desert on the Navajo Nation, the Grand Falls is a natural wonder that is truly a site to behold. Also known as Chocolate Falls, it gets its name from the rich brown color of the water. This 181 foot waterfall is fed by snowmelt or seasonal monsoon rains which flow from the Little Colorado River. Visitors can take in the beautiful scenery from a variety of vantage points, including a viewing platform at the top of the falls. With its stunning views and unique history, Grand Falls is a must-see for anyone traveling to Arizona.
Tips
The grandest of the Grand Falls is an occasion that only happens a handful of times a year. Timing is everything if you’re trying to catch it at its peak! This event happens with the seasonal spring melt or during the annual monsoons. The more it rains in the north eastern part of the state, the greater the output of the falls will be. You can check the current flow rate on the USGS website. If the reported flows are registering at 250 cubic feet per second (cfs) or more, there is a good chance that water is flowing over the falls. For the falls to be flowing at their grandest, look for a flow rate of at least 2000 cfs.
