What it's about

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, located in western Texas, is a rugged and remote landscape known for its towering peaks, expansive desert, and diverse ecosystems. Spanning over 86,000 acres, the park is home to Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet. The park’s dramatic landscapes, from high desert to lush canyons, offer a stunning backdrop for outdoor adventures.

The park holds significant geological and cultural importance. Established as a national park in 1972, Guadalupe Mountains preserves the world’s most extensive Permian fossil reef, providing valuable insights into Earth’s geological history. An interesting fact is that the park’s McKittrick Canyon is renowned for its stunning fall foliage, which is unusual for the desert environment.

Must-see attractions include the hike to Guadalupe Peak, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. The McKittrick Canyon Trail is a favorite for its vibrant autumn colors and lush vegetation. The historic Frijole Ranch, now a museum, provides a glimpse into the early ranching history of the area. The Salt Basin Dunes, located on the western edge of the park, offer a unique landscape of brilliant white gypsum dunes.

The best time to visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park is during the spring and fall, particularly between March and May and September and November, when the weather is mild and ideal for hiking and exploring. Summer can be extremely hot, making strenuous activities more challenging, while winter can bring cold temperatures and occasional snow, especially at higher elevations.
