Description
Hermit Road is a beautiful scenic drive that travels along the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The road begins on the west side of Grand Canyon Village and ends at Hermits Rest. Along the way, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the canyon, as well as a variety of plant and animal life. The road is named for John Wesley Powell, who explored the Grand Canyon in 1869. Powell and his team were the first to map the area, and their expedition took them down the Colorado River all the way to the bottom of the canyon. Today, Hermit Road provides a unique opportunity to see the canyon from above, and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arizona.
Tips
Hermit Road is only open to private vehicles during the winter months of December, January and February. During all other months this beautiful scenic drive can be by accessed via the free Red Route bus system, as well as by walking and bicycling.
