What it's about
Hot Springs National Park, located in central Arkansas, is a unique blend of natural and cultural history, known for its thermal springs and historic bathhouses. Covering over 5,500 acres, the park is nestled in the Ouachita Mountains and offers a serene environment where visitors can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the hot springs and explore the rich history of the area.
The park’s history dates back thousands of years, with Native American tribes recognizing the healing properties of the hot springs. It was designated as a federal reservation in 1832, making it one of the oldest protected areas in the United States, and became a national park in 1921. An interesting fact is that the thermal waters of Hot Springs flow from the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain, emerging at an average temperature of 143°F (62°C).
Must-see attractions include Bathhouse Row, a collection of historic bathhouses that offer a glimpse into the early 20th-century spa culture. Visitors can also hike the Hot Springs Mountain Trail for panoramic views or explore the Grand Promenade, a scenic walkway that winds through the heart of the park.
The best time to visit Hot Springs National Park is during the spring and fall, from March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor activities. The summer months can be hot and humid, while winter offers a quieter experience with fewer visitors.
