Reaching the falls requires an adventurous hike, making it a rewarding destination for experienced hikers. The trail is approximately 8.5 miles round trip and is considered moderate to strenuous, involving multiple stream crossings and uneven terrain. Hikers typically take around 5 hours to complete the journey.

The trail features over 40 stream crossings, requiring careful navigation across slippery rocks and muddy paths. Dense vegetation adds to the challenge, and it’s recommended to wear long pants and sturdy, water-resistant footwear. The trail is marked with faded ribbons, and following the water upstream can help guide hikers along the correct path.

Safety is crucial when hiking to Kaipapau Falls. It’s advised to avoid hiking during or after heavy rainfall, as this can create slippery conditions and increase the risk of flash floods. Hikers should bring sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit, and it’s a good idea to inform someone of your plans and expected return time. The trailhead is located at the end of Kawaipuna Street in Hauʻula, with parking available along the street. No permits are required to hike this trail, but there are limited facilities available, so visitors should plan accordingly.
