What it's about
Lake Clark National Park, located in southwestern Alaska, is a hidden gem that combines the dramatic beauty of rugged mountains, pristine lakes, and active volcanoes. Spanning over 4 million acres, the park offers a diverse landscape that includes alpine tundra, coastal forests, and stunning waterways. The centerpiece, Lake Clark itself, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and the backdrop of the Chigmit Mountains, creating a breathtakingly picturesque setting.
The park holds significant cultural and historical value, particularly for the Dena’ina people who have lived in the region for centuries. Established in 1980 to protect its natural and cultural resources, Lake Clark is also known for its role in the life of renowned conservationist Richard Proenneke, who lived alone in the park for nearly 30 years. An interesting fact is that the park is home to two active volcanoes, Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna, which add to the park’s dramatic and ever-changing landscape.
Must-see attractions include the awe-inspiring Tanalian Falls, the serene Twin Lakes, and the historic Proenneke cabin, where visitors can learn about Proenneke’s self-sufficient lifestyle. For adventure seekers, the park offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and backcountry hiking.
The best time to visit Lake Clark is from June to September, when the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities, and the park’s natural beauty is at its peak. The summer months provide long daylight hours and the best conditions for wildlife viewing and exploring the park’s diverse landscapes.
