What it's about
Lassen Volcanic National Park, located in northern California, is a dynamic landscape of volcanic features, pristine lakes, and lush forests. Covering over 106,000 acres, the park is renowned for its geothermal wonders, including steaming fumaroles, boiling springs, and bubbling mud pots. Lassen Peak, an active volcano that last erupted in 1915, is one of the park’s most iconic landmarks, offering a fascinating glimpse into the forces that shape our planet.
The park holds significant historical and geological importance. Established in 1916, Lassen Volcanic is one of the few places on Earth where all four types of volcanoes—shield, composite, cinder cone, and plug dome—can be found. An interesting fact is that Bumpass Hell, the park’s largest hydrothermal area, features a boardwalk trail that takes visitors through a surreal landscape of hissing steam vents and colorful mineral deposits.
Must-see attractions include the Lassen Peak Trail, which provides a challenging hike to the summit with panoramic views, and the serene Manzanita Lake, perfect for kayaking and wildlife watching. The Devastated Area Interpretive Trail offers insights into the aftermath of Lassen Peak’s 1915 eruption.
The best time to visit Lassen Volcanic National Park is from late spring to early fall, particularly between June and October, when the weather is mild and the park’s trails and roads are fully accessible. Summer is ideal for hiking and exploring, while fall offers vibrant foliage and a quieter experience with fewer visitors.
