Makapu‘u Lookout

Makapu‘u Lookout offers some of the most breathtaking views on O‘ahu. Located on the island’s southeastern coast, this vantage point provides panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and the neighboring islands of Moloka‘i and Lana‘i on clear days.

The lookout is easily accessible via a short walk from the parking area along Kalaniana‘ole Highway. From this spot, you can observe the dramatic coastline, the historic Makapu‘u Lighthouse, and the offshore islets that serve as wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds.

For those interested in a more immersive experience, the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail is a paved path that leads to the lighthouse. This moderately strenuous hike spans approximately 1.25 miles one way and offers stunning ocean views along the way. The trail culminates at a lookout above the lighthouse, providing a unique perspective of the area.

The area is also known for its whale-watching opportunities during the winter months, as humpback whales migrate through these waters. A telescope is available at the summit lookout for enhanced viewing.
