What it's about

New River Gorge National Park, located in southern West Virginia, is known for its stunning river canyon, rich history, and diverse recreational opportunities. Spanning over 70,000 acres, the park encompasses the New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America, which winds through the rugged Appalachian Mountains. The park’s dramatic landscapes, including steep cliffs and forested slopes, provide a picturesque backdrop for a variety of outdoor adventures.

The park holds significant geological and cultural importance. Designated as a national park in 2020, New River Gorge has a rich history that includes Native American heritage, early European settlement, and a vibrant coal mining past. An interesting fact is that the New River is one of the few rivers in the world that flows northward, cutting through ancient Appalachian geology.

Must-see attractions include the New River Gorge Bridge, one of the longest single-arch bridges in the world, which offers spectacular views and is the centerpiece of the annual Bridge Day festival. The Endless Wall Trail provides breathtaking vistas of the gorge and is a favorite among hikers and rock climbers. Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall on the New River, offers stunning views and opportunities for photography. The Thurmond Historic District, a former coal mining town, provides a glimpse into the region’s industrial past.

The best time to visit New River Gorge National Park is during the spring and fall, particularly between April and October, when the weather is mild and ideal for hiking, rafting, and exploring. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant greenery, while fall offers a spectacular display of autumn colors. Summer is popular for its warm weather and abundant outdoor activities, while winter provides a quieter experience with the possibility of snow-covered landscapes and serene hikes.
