What it's about
The Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout is a stunning historical and natural landmark offering breathtaking panoramic views of the windward side of the island. Perched at about 1,200 feet above sea level in the Nu‘uanu Valley, the lookout provides sweeping vistas of lush greenery, the Koolau Mountain Range, and the towns of Kāne‘ohe and Kailua below.
Historical Significance
The Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout holds significant historical importance as the site of the Battle of Nu‘uanu in 1795. This pivotal battle was part of King Kamehameha I’s campaign to unite the Hawaiian Islands under his rule. It was here that Kamehameha’s forces drove O‘ahu’s defenders to the edge of the steep cliffs, securing victory and furthering his unification efforts. The Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout is easily accessible by car and is located off the Pali Highway (Route 61).
