What it's about

Olympic National Park, located in the Pacific Northwest of Washington state, is a diverse and breathtaking landscape that encompasses rugged coastline, lush temperate rainforests, and towering mountain ranges. Spanning over 922,000 acres, the park’s unique ecosystems and dramatic scenery offer a wide range of outdoor experiences, from hiking and camping to wildlife viewing and tidepooling.

The park holds significant ecological and cultural importance. Established as a national park in 1938, Olympic preserves a unique combination of natural environments, each supporting a rich variety of plant and animal life. An interesting fact is that Olympic National Park is home to some of the largest old-growth temperate rainforests in the United States, including the Hoh Rain Forest, where annual rainfall can exceed 140 inches.

Must-see attractions include Hurricane Ridge, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and access to numerous hiking trails. The Hoh Rain Forest, with its dense canopy of moss-draped trees and lush undergrowth, provides a magical and serene hiking experience. The park’s rugged coastline, particularly at Rialto Beach and Ruby Beach, features dramatic sea stacks, tidepools, and opportunities to spot marine wildlife. Lake Crescent, a glacially-carved lake, offers pristine waters for kayaking, swimming, and picnicking.

The best time to visit Olympic National Park is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm and the park’s trails and roads are most accessible. Summer provides the most pleasant conditions for hiking and exploring, with wildflowers in bloom and long daylight hours. Fall offers beautiful foliage and a quieter experience with fewer visitors. Winter brings heavy snowfall to the mountains, offering opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, while the rainforests remain lush and green year-round.
