What it's about
Petrified Forest National Park, located in northeastern Arizona, is a captivating landscape where ancient history meets stunning desert beauty. Spanning over 220,000 acres, the park is famous for its extensive deposits of petrified wood, colorful badlands, and rich archaeological sites. The park’s unique combination of geological wonders and cultural artifacts makes it a fascinating destination for visitors.
The park’s history is deeply intertwined with the ancient Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited the area thousands of years ago. Established as a national monument in 1906 and later a national park in 1962, the Petrified Forest preserves a wealth of fossilized trees that date back over 200 million years to the Late Triassic period. An interesting fact is that the petrified wood found here is among the most colorful and well-preserved in the world, showcasing vibrant hues of red, yellow, and purple.
Must-see attractions include the Rainbow Forest, where visitors can marvel at the brilliant colors of the petrified wood, and the Painted Desert, known for its strikingly colorful landscape. The park also features several ancient petroglyph sites, such as Newspaper Rock and Puerco Pueblo, offering insights into the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The best time to visit Petrified Forest is from late spring to early fall, particularly between May and October, when the weather is warm and ideal for exploring the park’s trails and scenic drives. Summer offers the most pleasant conditions, while winter can bring cooler temperatures and occasional snow.
