The Phoenix Zoo opened in 1962 and is the largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the United States. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the zoo was founded by Robert Maytag, a member of the Maytag family, and operates on 125 acres of land in the Papago Park area of Phoenix. The zoo has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
The Phoenix Zoo is divided into four themed areas or trails: Arizona Trail, Africa Trail, Tropics Trail, and Children's Trail, which includes a petting zoo. The trails are designed to give visitors an idea of what it would be like to visit the regions represented by each trail. All animals on display at the zoo live in habitats that closely approximate their natural environment. Additionally, there are special exhibits such as Monkey Village and Camel Rides that provide visitors with opportunities to interact with animals up close.
