Pu’u Manamana, also known as Crouching Lion, is a challenging and rewarding hike located on the windward coast. The trailhead is located off of Kamehameha Highway near the town of Kaaawa. The hike is about 1.5 miles round trip and typically takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace.
The trail starts at the base of the ridge, where you’ll begin climbing steeply up through dense vegetation. Parts of the trail can be slippery and require careful footing, especially as you approach the rocky sections near the top. There are a few spots where you’ll need to scramble over rocks, making it a hike suited for experienced or adventurous hikers, as the terrain can be challenging.
At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the windward coast, including the lush valleys, rugged cliffs, and clear waters below. The peak’s distinctive shape—resembling a crouching lion from a distance—adds to the hike’s allure. While the trail is not long, the steep ascent and rocky terrain make it best suited for those who are comfortable with moderate to difficult hikes. The trail is not well-maintained, so it’s important to be cautious and prepared with sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
