What it's about
The Haiku Stairs, often referred to as the “Stairway to Heaven,” is one of O‘ahu’s most iconic hikes, offering stunning views of the island’s lush landscapes. Though the traditional route to the stairs is closed to the public, there’s a legal alternative via the Moanalua Valley Trail, which provides access to spectacular panoramic views of O‘ahu’s windward coast. This 9-mile round-trip hike takes you through dense forest and up to the Moanalua Middle Ridge, offering sweeping vistas of the Ko‘olau mountain range, Kaneohe Bay, and unique views of the Haiku Stairs from a different angle.
The Moanalua Valley Trail is considered moderate in difficulty, with a gradual ascent that gets steeper toward the end. Along the way, hikers will encounter lush vegetation and historical remnants related to the Haiku Stairs’ construction, giving the hike a deeper connection to the island’s past. While the path is well-maintained, it can get muddy, so it’s important to wear sturdy shoes with good traction. Although the trail is legal to hike, it is crucial to avoid climbing the Haiku Stairs themselves, as doing so is prohibited. With early arrival recommended for parking at Moanalua Valley Park, this hike offers a thrilling and legal way to experience the beauty of the Stairway to Heaven without violating the regulations.
