In the early 1980s, the area was designated as a National Monument. The monument protects Sunset Crater and nearby cinder cones, lava flows and volcanic ash deposits.
A popular 1-mile long trail leads to the top of the crater rim, where you can see deep into the volcanic vent. A popular 1-mile trail leads from the visitor center to an overlook of the crater floor. The park has a number of hiking trails and other activities for visitors to enjoy, including educational programs and ranger-guided walks.
There is a $25.00 (2022) fee per vehicle. This covers entry to both Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments.
