Upper Antelope Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the American Southwest. The canyon is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona, and features a series of deeply carved red rock formations. Visitors can explore the canyon via a network of hiking trails, and many tour companies offer guided tours. Upper Antelope Canyon is best known for its dramatic light effects. The canyon walls are very steep, and the high canyon walls allow only a small amount of sunlight to reach the floor. As a result, the light that does reach the bottom of the canyon is often filtered through waves and swirls of red rock. This creates a unique and beautiful light show that changes throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
Antelope Canyon is protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation and can only be reached by guided tour. Book your tours weeks in advance as they will fill up.
The best time to visit Antelope Canyon is between the end of March and the beginning of October. In terms of the best time of day to visit the canyon, going between 11 am and 1:30 pm will give you the highest chance of seeing the famous Antelope Canyon light beams, but this place every time of day.
Be sure to check the day of your visit. They've been known to have to close due to flooding during monsoon season.
What’s the difference between Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon?
LOWER CANYON: This slot canyon is longer and is situated below ground. The experience is more physically demanding and will have you descending ladders, sand floors, and maneuvering over small boulders. The entire Tour from start to finish requires about 1 mile of walking . Lower Antelope Canyon is shaped like a “V” with a narrow pathway that opens up to the sky. Whereas Upper Antelope Canyon is shaped like an “A” with a wider pathway that narrows as you approach the top of the canyon.
UPPER CANYON: Upper Antelope Canyon is more accessible. Its entrance and entire length are at ground level, requiring no climbing, and much less walking. The experience trip is about one hour.
