What it's about
Voyageurs National Park, located in northern Minnesota, is a water-based park that offers a unique blend of interconnected waterways, lush forests, and rocky shores. Spanning over 218,000 acres, the park is renowned for its pristine lakes, including Rainy Lake, Kabetogama Lake, and Namakan Lake, which provide endless opportunities for boating, fishing, and exploring. The park’s name honors the French-Canadian fur traders, known as voyageurs, who traveled these waters in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The park holds significant historical and ecological importance. Established as a national park in 1975, Voyageurs preserves the rich history of the fur trade era and the natural beauty of the Northwoods. An interesting fact is that the park is one of the few places in the continental United States where visitors can experience the northern lights, especially in the fall and winter months.
Must-see attractions include the Kettle Falls Hotel, a historic landmark accessible only by boat, and Ellsworth Rock Gardens, where visitors can see intricate rock sculptures created by an early park settler. The park’s extensive network of waterways and remote islands offer excellent opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and houseboating.
The best time to visit Voyageurs National Park is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm and ideal for water activities. Fall also offers a stunning display of autumn colors and a chance to see the northern lights. Winter provides a unique experience with opportunities for ice fishing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, but visitors should be prepared for cold temperatures and limited access to some areas.
