What it's about
West Fork Oak Creek, located near Sedona in the Coconino National Forest, is a stunning hiking destination known for its beautiful canyon trail along the West Fork of Oak Creek. The trail is approximately 6.5 to 7.8 miles long as an out-and-back hike and is relatively flat, making it suitable for hikers of most skill levels. However, it’s considered moderate due to the challenge of crossing the creek multiple times, about 13 in total. These crossings may involve wading or stepping on rocks, particularly during high water periods.
The hike offers scenic views of towering canyon walls and lush vegetation along the creek. The path is well-maintained and navigable, but during certain seasons, particularly winter, parts of the trail can be icy. Therefore, it’s advisable to bring micro-spikes or traction devices and hiking poles for the creek crossings, especially when the rocks are wet and slippery.
Parking is available at the trailhead for a fee of $11, and it’s recommended to arrive early as the parking lot tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekends. The trailhead opens at 8 am and offers facilities like toilets and picnic tables. Due to its popularity and the limited number of parking spaces, it’s best to plan your visit accordingly to avoid peak times.
The best times to hike West Fork Oak Creek are during the spring and fall months when the weather is mild, and the foliage is vibrant. However, it’s also worth visiting in winter for the serene frozen landscape, although you should be prepared for colder temperatures and potentially icy conditions.
