What it's about
White Sands National Park, located in southern New Mexico, is a stunning and unique landscape that features the largest gypsum dune field in the world. The park encompasses 275 square miles of glistening white sands, creating a surreal and otherworldly environment. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, sledding on the dunes, and stargazing.
White Sands holds significant geological and ecological importance. Established as a national monument in 1933 and redesignated as a national park in 2019, it preserves the unique gypsum dune ecosystem. An interesting fact is that the gypsum sand is cool to the touch, even on the hottest days, due to its high rate of evaporation and reflection of sunlight.
Must-see attractions include the Dunes Drive, an eight-mile scenic drive that provides access to various trailheads and picnic areas. The Alkali Flat Trail offers a challenging hike through the heart of the dune field, while the Interdune Boardwalk provides an accessible route with informative exhibits about the park’s natural history. Ranger-led programs, such as full moon hikes and sunset strolls, offer unique opportunities to learn about the park’s ecology and geology.
The best time to visit White Sands National Park is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are mild and more comfortable for outdoor activities. Spring and fall provide the most pleasant conditions for hiking and exploring the dunes. Summer can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making early morning or late evening visits more enjoyable.
